What's Happening in La Ventana? Let us know if you have something to share or questions for the community.
Baja Night Sky - An hour before sunrise at 6 am on Thursday, April 24, the eastern sky will be ablaze with a crescent moon and 3 planets. Venus will not be this bright again until September 2026. Also take a look at these planets on Friday morning and see if you can find the smiley face. Tom at BajaNightSky@gmail.com
Baja Birding Club - Hoo’s Hoo in the Baja Night. Can owls really swivel their heads 360 degrees? Why do owls barf every 8 to 24 hours and how does that help biologists? Why are owls like stealth attack planes? Do all owls only hunt in the dark of night? Why do some owls have feather tufts on their heads? What kinds of owls are found in the Baja Peninsula? And how do we find them? To get answers to these questions and many more, join Dr. David Bird, Emeritus Professor of Wildlife Biology at McGill University, Montreal, in a free visual lecture on these mysterious and highly revered birds. Before and after the lecture and using the latest advanced technology, we will venture into the field in an effort to see and/or hear some local owls in our villages.
The field trips before and after the lecture are optional. We will meet at Oscaritos grocery store at 1700, Friday, April 25 and drive north for a kilometer to look for a Western Screech Owl at a friend’s house. We will then drive to Palapas Ventana Resort for 1800 for a lecture on owls, while you enjoy one of the resort’s sumptuous dinners or sip on a beer or margarita. Around 2000, we will walk next door to look for a Great Horned Owl. If there is further interest and it is not too late, we might drive to South Beach to look for Barn Owls and then back to El Sargento for Elf Owls. No guarantees… these birds are quite secretive and elusive!
Note: There is no fee and you do not need to reserve a spot. And yes, I will do another one in the 2025/2026 season.
No Más Basura - NMB Garage Sale: Please drop off your used items before May 1st between 7am and 6pm at Casa Clara, a yellow house with a wooden gate, to the right of Casa Verde on C. Salome Lucero. Check out our visual of where to leave your donated goods: Facebook & Instagram
Recycling Center: Thursday, April 24 from 8:00 to 10:00 am behind the Farmer's Market. Here is what we recycle: all Plastics (including caps!), Glass Bottles (broken too!), Aluminum cans, Metals (including metal caps), Packaging Styrofoam, Batteries, Cork, Cigarette Butts (in DRY PET bottle), and 5 gallon water jugs. We also love glass containers with metal lids for reuse purposes!
Semana Santa Operation: We didn’t quite meet our fundraising goal this year to rent as many portable bathrooms or secure pangas, so we made a few adjustments — fewer bathrooms, no boats — and switched things up with the kids. The result? An epic beach day and pizza party that might’ve been even more fun than past panga outings! Stay tuned for upcoming footage! We’re still accepting donations to help cover expenses — we didn’t raise nearly enough to meet our costs, and every bit helps!
We invested $83,766.00 MXN to install 20 portable toilets, distributed 450 trash bags, had the participation of 22 students and 10 volunteers, and placed 30 trash barrels.
The Municipal Police informed us that Friday the 18th was the day with the highest number of visitors in the bay, counting 2,850 people camping along the beaches, from Aguascalientes to La Bufadora.
It’s very important to note that from the 20 portable toilets, we extracted 6,200 liters of waste (feces, urine, diapers, and sanitary pads). If we convert liters to kilograms, we could say that this Holy Week we prevented over 6 tons of fecal matter from contaminating our bay. Thanks to this, we reduced the risk of sanitary issues and diseases such as gastroenteritis, conjunctivitis, dermatitis, and respiratory illnesses.
Please take a moment to watch this video with data from COFEPRIS (Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks), discussing the most polluted beaches in the country.
We’d also like to mention that ZOFEMAT, using their pickup and trailer, made 5 trips full of trash to the landfill between Thursday the 17th and Tuesday the 22nd.
So far, we have not been able to recover the $83,766.00 MXN we invested, which is why your support is so important to help us keep going. We deeply appreciate any additional support you can offer. There’s still time to join in! Here and here are receipts for the toilets, trash bags, and some of the barrels. We also had expenditures in fuel, food, drinks and labor.
Thank you for being part of the change. Your NMB Team. Contact: gerencia@nomasbasuralv.com Website: nomasbasuralv.com Instagram: @nomasbasuralv Facebook: @NMB No Más Basura
